This paper aims to explore the aesthetic function of poems by comparing two well - known lyrics of dif- ferent styles. Bryant＇s To a waterfowl and Mien Poe＇s To Helen are quite different in subjects and styles, but they are universally appreciated because they touch the essence of the aesthetics of poems, the aim of which is to seek the true, the good and the beautiful, that is, the unity of the content, form and practical function of poems.
