Under the frame of cooperative principle and politeness principle, a classic dialogue in King Lear is analyzed with the aim to reveal the causes of the tragic fates of King Lear and his youngest daughter, Cordelia, i.e., both of them have committed mistakes in discourse behavior-the improper use of cooperative principle and politeness principle. The correlation between the two principles is explored further into and their realistic significance is discussed.
