Some similarities and differences between the American standard ASME Y14. 5M and the Chinese standard GB/T 1182 - 1996 are compared and the main differences are described. As a result, the mechanical engineers and technicians will have a better understanding of the shape and position tolerance in the American standard, thus promoting the international exchanges and cooperation between the both sides.
