Dvorak＇s best known opera Rusalka has never been fully staged in Melbourne. Opera Australi＇s artistic director Richard Hickox is changing that.The company＇s new Melbourne season will be the fifth time he has conducted the work since 1993, which is as often as he has performed any work. Opera Australia＇s season opened on April 14 with the Australian premiere of Rossini＇s The Barber of Seville starring the company＇s favorite soprano, Emma Matthews, followed by Verdi＇s Il Trovatore, Rusalka, and Gilbert and Sullivan＇s Pirates of Penzance, all of which had premieres in Sydney. This Rusalka production is directed by Olivia Fuchs, who first presented it for England＇s Opera North in 2003. Designer Niki Turner and choreographer Claire Glaskin also took part, and the lead was sung by the young English soprano Sally Matthews.
