Objective:Multivariate association was sought between cardiovascular risk factor levels and a set of anthropometric variables,to determine which anthropometric parameter correlated most highly with the risk factors. Methods:Data including body height and weight;waist, abdominal and hip circumferences;and risk factors(serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood sugar, systolic and diastolic blood pressure)were available from a survey of cardiovascular risk factors in free living individuals ( n =1 098)of Jiangsu rural area(1992).After calculating body mass index(BMI),waist/hip ratio(WHR),abdominal/hip ratio(AHR)and conicity index(CI),the association of a set of anthropometric parameters with the risk factors was explored by canonical correlation analysis. Results:Canonical correlations were statistically significant between the anthropometric parameters and cardiovascular risk factors in all sex age specific groups.Standardized canonical coefficients from canonical analysis suggested that the weight for BMI was the highest and positive in all sex age groups.Of the anthropometric variables,BMI consistently demonstrated the highest correlation coefficients with cardiovascular risk factors.Of the risk factor variables, the correlation coefficient of blood pressure was generally the highest. Conclusion:The canonical correlation analysis indicates that BMI,the simplest but most important of the anthropometric measurements,is most highly correlated with blood pressure.
