From the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, England experienced a period of social transformation from the agricultural society to the industrial society. Adapting to the requirements of the merchandised economy, some members of the landed class changed their former land management modes to make more profits. They were engaged mainly in mining industry and in communications improvements on their estates, which created the necessary material conditions for the subsequent Industrial Revolution. In this sense, the landowners were "innovators", "promoters", "investors" and "pioneers" in the early development of British industry.
