The quartz crystal microbalance is a powerful new instrument concept in the area of thermal analysis and calorimetry of thin films. Both the physical and chemical properties of films can be investigated. Typical applications are water uptake and softening of pharmaceutical film coats, solvent uptake in fullerene films, drying and curing of paints and spray-on enamel, and detection in the early stages of bacterial growth on a nutrient medium by monitoring mass change and metabolic heat evolution.
