根据大中华文库《儒林外史》汉英对照本,结合实例,探讨了宪益、戴乃迭英译本中的省略和抽象现象,分析了略和抽象翻译的原因及其对译文忠实性,文化的交流及读者接受的影响。

This paper tends to explore the ellipsis and abstract phenomenon in the translation of ＂Rulinwaishi＂ by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang. Introducing many examples from the Chinese-English version of ＂The Scholars＂, Library of Chinese Classics, it makes an attempt to sort and find out the reasons of ellipsis and abstract and their influence on faithfulness of translation, cultural communication and the reception of readers.
