On the Canonicity of Pearl SBuck's The Good Earth

在20世纪美国文学史上,赛珍珠及其作品素来没有受到关注。始于世纪之交,由于中外文化交流事业的发展,也由于全球化时代的到来,中美两国开始重温赛珍珠。今天,我们研究《大地》,是因为这部作品自身具有经典性,即经典的本质性特征。本文拟通过文本分析,从《大地》内涵的丰富性、理念的创新性、主题的普世性和审美创造性诸层面,对这部小说的经典性作一分析。

Pearl S. Buck never received adequate academic attention from American literary historians in the twentieth century although she is Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1938. At the turn of the century, she and her works, The Good Earth in particular, were once more widely read both in China and in the United States due to the strengthening of the Sino-American cultural exchanges and the advent of globalization. The present essay makes a study of the novel from the canonical perspective with its rich content, its original conception, its thematic universality and aesthetic features as the focus.
