Reading with Pleasure the Inner Mind of a Literary Giant in the Textbook on Literature——Appreciating Ernest Hemingway's Short Story In Another Country

本文用海明威的“冰山原则”分析了他的短篇小说《在异乡》的语言特征及其对主题思想的再现。该小说收入大学教材《美国文学欣赏》中。此文旨在表明,大学本科的文学教师要重视文学的课堂教学,并传授学生有效地欣赏文学文本的方法。只有这样才能真正激发学生的文学兴趣和热情,提高他们的文学悦读能力。

This paper applies Hemingway＇ s Iceberg Principle to analyzing language features and thematic representation of his story In Another Country. The story is anthologized in the textbook Appreciating American Literature. The paper aims at drawing literature teachers＇ attention to attaching importance to class teaching for undergraduates, and teaching them how to effectively appreciate literary works. Only by doing so, can the students＇ interest in and enthusiasm for literature be aroused, and is their ability of reading with pleasure literature greatly improved.
