This essay analyzes a female character——Eveline in Dubliners by James Joyce, and describes her sufferings from work and family life, and exhibits her longings for love and a promising future, thus presenting a tender, pitiful image of the girl whose "epiphany" is far from sufficient, and revealing the spiritual paralysis which is very pervasive in Dublin as well as the whole Ireland under the control of the Roman Catholic Church and the British colonial rule.
