This paper discusses the guiding ideology for specialty construction of application -oriented materials science and en gineering. Then the authors expound the basic requirements of cultivating application- oriented talents and the model of culti vation system. What is finally pointed out is that the specialty construction of application -oriented materials engineering is first and foremost the education of application - oriented engineering, At the same time, importance should be attached to general science education, to pioneering and innovative education, to ethic education of materials engineering and to combined education of production, learning and research.
