Marjorie Perloff is Sadie Dernham Patek Professor Emerita of Humanities, Stanford University, USA, and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was 2006 president of the Modern Language Association if America(MLA). She is one of the foremost American critics of modernist and contemporary poetry. Her work has been especially concerned with explicating the writing of experimental and avant-garde poets and relating it to the major currents of modernist and, especially, postmodernist activity in the arts, including the visual arts and cultural theory. She is author of 14 academic books such as The Poetics of Indeterminacy: Rimbaud to Cage, and nearly 400 essays. In June 2007, Professor Luo Lianggong, assistant Editor-in-chief of Foreign Literature Studies, had an interview, via Email, with Professor Marjorie Perloff just before she left for China to attend the International Conference on the 20th-Century American Poetry (July 21-23, 2007) organized by Foreign Literature Studies. This interview centers around Professor Perloff's poetics, her thinking on American poetry, particularly avant-garde poetry and Language poetry. Professor Perloff gives a summary of her poetics and its evolution, and also offers a tentative comparison between herself and Harold Bloom in terms of poetics. She tends to describe herself as a formalist, a literary historian and an evaluative comparatist critic. As to American poetry, she provides her insight to the role of minority poetry and foreign poetry in modern and post-modern American poetry. As a critic who has long studies Language poetry, Professor Perloff presents her unique understanding of the distinctive qualities and weak points of this poetic movement and of its significance in America poetry.
