Brief Discussion on Xiao Fu by Kong Zang and Four-sentence Literary Works in West Han Dynasty

孔臧其人及其作品,史书记载语焉不详,其事迹及作品今存于《孔丛子》中,其中的四赋二书当是可靠的。他的《鸮赋》是纯粹的四言诗体赋,确为西汉早期的作品。而四言诗体赋产生也较早,非起于扬雄。从西汉初年到扬雄、刘歆,四言诗体赋呈现着不断发展和完善的特色。

There is little recorded in history about Kong Zang and his works. Today, his life story and works can be found in a book entitled Kong Cong Zi. In particular, his Xiao Fu is purely a four-sentence poetic literary creation in the early period of West Han Dynasty, but four-sentence literary works begin not from Yang Xiong, but from an even earlier time. From the early period of West Han Dynasty to the time of Yang Xiong and Liu Xin, four-sentence literary works increasingly develop and become perfect.
