The Role of Mother Tongue in Foreign Language Teaching

摘要 在外语课堂上,是否应该使用母语一直是个有争议的问题,许多外语教师在课堂上使用了母语之后往往会觉得内疚。作者回顾了有关在外语教学中使用母语的研究,分析了中国外语课堂的现状,认为母语在中国的外语课堂上应有一席之地,并且提出了适合使用汉语的教学环节,同时认为关于母语在外语课堂的使用问题上,关键的问题是在什么时候,怎样在外语课堂上使用母语,以及母语使用的"度"该如何把握。 The use of mother tongue in foreign language classrooms in China has always been a controversial issue, and foreign language teachers sometimes feel guilt -ridden when they do "slip" back to Chinese. By viewing the literature on the use of mother tongue and considering the present situation in foreign language classrooms in China, the author believes that the use of Chinese can be warranted. The procedures in which mother tongue can be used are also suggested.The key question is when, how and to what extent Chinese should be used in foreign langnige classrooms.
