The paper aims at exploring the relationship between the TT and its ST by applying Umberto Eco's notion "Model Reader". It concludes that each ST allows of innumerable different TTs; different TTs can be created out of the same ST by different translators, and each TT is merely one of many TTs the ST prestructures, an incomplete fulfillment of the ST's model reader. The TT can neither be equivalent/faithful nor irrelevant to its ST. They are two different and autonomous texts but with certain degrees of similarity and certain overlapping parts: the TT pos- sesses certain elements absent from the ST while the ST possesses something unconveyable to the TT.
