摘要
讨论了民族音乐学定义的多样性、界定一个学科的不同方式、“民族音乐学”这一术语的历史、民族音乐学家的主要研究活动以及最后在该领域找到自己的那一类人。此外还试图提出一个对全书来说是最重要的钳形定义,并且把它和四方面的信条连接在一起:(1)民族音乐学是研究文化中的音乐的;(2)民族音乐学是从比较的观点和相对主义的观点来研究世界上的音乐的;(3)大体上说,民族音乐学是研究田野调查之效用的;(4)民族音乐学是研究一个社会所有的音乐表现形式的。
This essay talked about the multiplicity of the definitions of ethnomusicology, the different ways of defining a discipline, the history of the term "ethnomusicology", the principal activities of ethnomuslcologists, and the kinds of people who eventually find themselves in this field. Beyond these, the author tried to give a two-pronged definition that is central to this book, and should like to tie it to four areas of belief: 1 ) Ethnomusicology is the study of music in culture; 2) Ethnomusicology is the study of the world's musics from a comparative and relativistic perspective; 3 )Principally, ethnomusicology is study with the use of fieldwork; 4) Ethnomusicology is the study of all of the musical manifestations of a society.
