This article seeks to explore the cognitive mechanism inherent in certain figures of speech ( e. g. metaphor or metonymy) assuming various degrees of conventionalization, which leads to a range of phenomena relative to semantics/pragmatics continuum. Creative, one-off metonymic expressions can be accounted for within the framework of relevance theory. Metonymy is thought to be a variety of the creative use of language. The degrees of conventionalization determines the continuum of a given metonymy, along which one end is fully semanticized, and the other end is one-off, creative non-literal utterance.
