This essay attempts to provocatively reread Doris Lessing＇ s anti - colonial canon The Grass Is Singing in the context of colonial trope, the trope of rape and analyze her unconscious complicity with colonization, which is evidenced by her convenient employment of colonial cultural representation of colonial desire, i. e. her stereotypical characterization of the black servant and the arrangement of the plot.
