Employing the psycho-analytic method to read the character of Emily in the perspective of feminism offers a new angle to interpret the charm of this Gothic story. William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily" relates the tragic life of Emily afflicted by patriarchy. As a victim of the Puritanical concept of woman morals in American south, Emily suffers perpetual loneliness and emotional oppression, which leads to her terrifying act of madness. The tragedy of Emily reveals the destruction of humanity, and women in particular, by the old social and religious forces in American south.
