Hypoxia-inducible factor-lα( HIF-lα) is a recently identified hypoxia responding regulation factor, which exists in mammals and humans. It plays a key role in the regulation of hypoxia-mediated gene expression. It can regulate many target genes' expression, such as vascular endothelial growth factor and erythropoietin. The action of HIF-lα may be attributed to its improving energy metabolism after cerebral hypoxia/ischemia, promoting cerebral hemodynamics, inhibiting excitatory amino acids toxicity, and reducing apoptosis. Further investigation of the expression and action profiles of HIF-lα and its target genes may lead to a new therapy strategy for cerebral hypoxia/ischemia injury.
