The distribution intramural lymph vessels of trachea in the guinea pig and the rabbit were examined by light and electron microscopy. The tracheal mucosal layer was provided with lymphatic capillary networks. Both capillary and collecting vessels were found in the submucosal, the muscular and the adventitia tunics. Lymphatic present percentage (guinea pig 36%; rabbit 23%; P <0.01) were examined in 320 section of tracheal organic tissues. Maximum diameter [guinea pig: 22.6±14.1μm( ±s ); rabbit: 23.7±14.9μm( ±s ) were measured by Olympus light microscopy fixed micrometer. Volume density [guinea pig: 2.05±0.49μm 3/μm 3×10 -3 ( ±s ); rabbit: 1.29±0.40μm 3/μm 3×10 -3 ( ±s )] and number density [guinea pig: 5.89±1.20Ly/mm 2( ±s ); rabbit: 2.32±0.58 Ly/mm 2 ( ±s )] of tracheal lymph vessels were determined by a computer image analyzer system. The density of tracheal lymph vessels in guinea pig was greater than that in rabbit. The lymphatic capillaries observed by electron microscopy in this study were structurally similar between guinea pig and rabbit. The nonfenestrated endothelium was thin and lacked a continuous basal lamina. The endothelial cells were joined to each other by three types of intercellular junctions end to end, overlapping and interdigitating. There were large vesicles in endotheliocyte.
