A Comparison between English and Chinese idioms and the Translation techniques

英汉成语各自承载着不同的文化信息,体现不同的文化特色,这给跨文化翻译带来很大困难。只有掌握英汉成语文化内涵的异同,对造成英汉成语表达差异的根源进行探讨才能成功地进行英汉成语互译。本文运用跨文化交际理论分析了英汉成语的文化异同,对英汉成语的互译进行了探索,提出应针对具体的语境采用不同的译法。

Language is a crystalization of culture and idioms are the essence of a language. English and Chinese idioms carry different cultural information and show different cultural characteristics, which bring great difficulties for translation. Only by having a good command of the different connotation of English and Chinese idioms and knowing the source of the differences can we translate well. This article analyses the cultural differences of English and Chinese idioms by applying the theory of cross - cultural communication. Different methods, such as literal translation, liberal translation, literal translation added by explanation, are introduced for different situations.
