An Analysis of the Portrait of Miriam in Sons and Lovers from a New Perspective

《儿子与情人》是劳伦斯的早期作品,在女主人公米莉亚姆身上体现出了渴望新生活、渴求知识并注重精神情趣的特点。她是保罗才智的崇拜者和支持者,是保罗母子之间的爱的牺牲品,是传统的性观念与追求性解放新思想之间冲突的受害者。同时在她身上反映出了当时男女不平等的社会现实。

This article analyses the character of Miriam in Sons and Lovers written by D.H. Lawrence from a new perspective through which it presents Miriam as a girl of spiritual tendency who looks forward to new experiences in life, who is eager to escape from farm life and is eager for knowledge. At the same time Miriam is not only the victim of Paul＇ s love for his mum and Mrs Morel＇ s love for her son but also she is the victim of the conflict between traditional view of sex and new concept of sex free. What＇s more through the portrait of Miriam the inequality of men and women in the society at that time is revealed as well.
