The African-Americans under slavery expressed their inner world and depicted their adverse circumstances by the songs they created on the basis of the heritage of traditional African culture. Slave songs served as a measure against the physical and spiritual brutality of slavery as well as a major means of communication and thus became an essential part of black culture.
