This paper, on the basis of Shakespeare's drama The Merchant of Venice, trys to reveal and interpret the essence of intense conflict between Judaism and Christianity at the close of Middle Ages. The author holds that this comedy, for the Jews, is in fact a tragedy of religious persecution, under which the Jewish Law survived and was constantly developed.
