Wuyan poems, a kind of poems made of lines containing five Chinese characters in each line, originally born in folk songs, bred by the discussion and practice by men of letters during the Han Dynasties and Wei,Jin and Liang times of Qi Dynasty, thrived to be two styles, the ancient Wuyan and Late Wuyan, which are influent to each other but unique in each own. They both are outstanding treasures in Chinese ancient Literature. As a representation of the formalistic poems, The Late Wuyan is strict in the number of characters, the scansion, couplets and rhymes in terms of form. The formal requirements became gradually fixed in the Liang times of Qi Dynasty, with the birth of the Chinese Prosody and research of the men of letters. They involve prosody of the styles, rhyming patterns and tones of Late Wuyan poems.
