深切怀念方心芳先生

In Memory of FANG Xin-fang

今年是方心芳老先生诞辰100周年,方心芳先生是我国著名的工业微生物学家、知名教授、老一辈的科学家。方老关心我国工业微生物发展,不遗余力地关心、培养人才。在抗日时期,方老排除困难,不顾个人安危,身藏菌种入川,在极端困难条件下开展研究工作,以木箱代培养箱,用电灯发热保温、培养和保存菌种,以人尿代硫酸氨,糖蜜发酵生产酒精,解决汽车缺油问题,所表现出艰苦奋斗的创新精神,给后人留下了深刻记忆。

This year is Professor FANG Xin-fang＇s 100th birthday. As a distinguished industrial microbiologist in China and a famous professor, Mr. Fang had made great contribution in industrial microbe development in China and talent training. During Sino-Japan War period, Mr. Fang overcame all the difficulty and carried microbial species by himself to Sichuan despite of his safety to proceed with microbiological research under extremely difficult conditions. At that time, he used wooden crate instead of culture box and electric lamp heating for the culture and storage of microbial species. Besides, he used urine instead of ammonia sulphate to produce alcohol as fuel by sugar cane fermentation. His lofty spirit has encouraged all generations and he is a respectable scientist for us. （Tran. by YUE Yang） .
