沈从文的文学批评是一种形式批评,立足回到文学自身。对“文字”的批评,是他形式批评的一个重要尺度。他所说的“文字”实际上是一种书面语言。他认为文字创造应该完全;“文字”运用与言语运用可以实行转化,提出以口语造“意境”;“文字”与言语转化的中介就是作者的深切体验和技巧的运用。

SHEN Cong-wen＇s literary criticism, basing itself on literary text, is a form criticism. He holds writers should pay attention to every aspect of language use in creation, interchange written language with spoken language if necessary and create a mode with spoken language. He thinks the intermedium of the interchange of written language and spoken language is writers＇ experience and use of writing techniques.
