Intercultural Communication and the Common Progress of World Civilizations

当今世界全球性交往日益密切,又呈现出文化与发展的多样性。跨文化研究和世界文明研究都已成为备受国际学术界关注的新兴跨学科研究领域。世界文明的多样性和同一性是其中的焦点课题,需要我们通过深化跨文化交往的理论研究来进行探察。跨文化交往与世界文明进程的关系主要有三个方面:(1)跨文化交往是世界文明(包括哲学传统)的重要动因;(2)跨文化理解、跨文化性和世界文明多样性中的同一性;(3)持合理的跨文化态度,遵守跨文化交往的伦理原则。因此,为了建立一个和谐世界,我们应致力于在合理的跨文化交往中实现不同文明的和谐进步。在全球化时代,跨文化交往是世界文明理论研究的重要课题,此项研究有助于树立合理的“文明交往观”,促进世界文明和谐的共同进步。

The world today presents a trend of diversifying cultures and developments as close global communication increases. Both intercultural studies and studies of world civilizations have become a new interdisciplinary research area being much concerned by the international academic community. The diversity and identity of world civilizations are a focusing subject and probing into it should be deepened through theoretical studies on intercultural communication. This paper only makes a brief discussion on the relationship of intercultural communication and process of world civilizations, outlined as the following three points. （1） Intercultural communication as a vital impetus of world civilizations including philosophical traditions. It is the mainstream of progress in human civilizations that various civilizations have been always enriched and developed in their harmonious intercultural communication and mutual digesting or studying. The typical examples are ancient Greek-Roman civilization and Chinese civilization. Mankind＇s historical development is the process of incessant exchange, convergence and innovation between different civilizations. It is important in particular to advocate rational intercultural communication and realize the harmonious unity residing in the diversity of civilization and culture for common progress of world civilizations. （2） Intercultural understanding, interculturality and identity in the diversity of world civilizations. Rational intercultural communication is an important channel to achieve a globalization of humanity based on both the diversity and identity of world civilizations. Confucius has the saying “harmony in diversity”, the meaning of dynamic identity residing in diversity. The dialectic intercultural understanding and positive interculturality are the sound base and true end of intercultural communication to realize the identity of diverse civilizations and to promote the harmonious coexistence and common progress of various civilizations. Comparative studies on philosophical doctrines of Confucius and Socrates profoundly influencing Chinese and Western traditions of civilization explain that both have been of identity and particularity, and the philosophical and cultural traditions in both civilizations might understand and convey each other so as to realize the positive interculturality in intercultural communication. （3） Assuming a positive intercultural attitude and complying with the ethical principle of intercultural communication. In the context of globalization and challenge of pluralistic culture, taking a rational intercultural attitude is particularly, important and studies on international ethics of intercultural communication should be further deepened yet. Three basic ethical principles of communication might be affirmed, mutual respect, mutual tolerance, and mutual cooperation. And the intercultural dialogue of different civilizations is the important path to comply with these basic ethical principles of communication so as to realize the harmonious progress of world civilizations together. In order to establish a harmonious world, we should make efforts to realize the harmonious common progress of diverse civilizations in rational intercultural communication. In the age of globalization, intercultural communication is the important issue of theoretical studies on world civilization, which would be helpful for forming the rational “view to communication of civilizaton” and promoting the common progress of world civilizations in a harmonious way.
