Development and Evolution of the Oath-making Conventions in Times of the Shang and the Zhou Dynasty

商代至西周时期盟誓习俗的变化以成、康前后为界,分为三个不同发展阶段。其中成、康时期通过盟誓将异姓宗族纳入周人宗法统治秩序,是周人与殷商等部族能够相互融合的关键。分封、朝会、祭祀、行刑,使宗法观念与盟誓习俗相互影响。这种相互影响的结果,使当时的社会结构和民族特性发生了较大改变。

The change of the oath - making conventions from the Shang to the West Zhou Dynasty went through three periods of development starting from about a time between King of Cheng and King of Kang. During this period of time, the practice of the Zhou people to accept people of other families into their patriarchal rule was the key policy to integrate the Zhou people with different tribes and the Shang family. Enfeoffment, court meeting, sacrifice- offering and execution made patriarchal ideas and oath- making conventions mutually influence, which changed considerably the social structure and national distinctions in those days.
