The sentimental novels between late 19^th century and early 20^th century of China mirrored the mentalities of various social classes and strata, as well as the vicissitudes of the society. Taking the social backdrop as the longitude and sentiment development as the latitude, they combined the two and extensively reflected the true facets of the then society and particularly mentalities and attitudes of the elites, which featured degeneration, alienation, depression, indecision and pursuit. Against this social backdrop of transition, many characters with some enlightening spirit were depicted in the novels to be on a transition into the modem society. It is concluded in the paper that the sentimental novels of that time had profound influence on the society and possesses perpetual artistic favor.
