Words and Truth: A Review of Doubt

本文是对话剧《怀疑》的评论文章。在对剧情进行分析之后作者认为,《怀疑》虽然标榜要让观众对“怀疑与信仰进行深入的思考”,但剧作家的真实意图却是在于通过话语的操作来掩盖事实真相。笔者认为,戏剧作品中的陈述与其所处的现实世界有种种微妙的联系。在对一出戏剧作品进行评价时,我们不能不考察作品中的语言与它所指涉的现实之间的关系。《怀疑》面对事实时的顾左右而言他,其实是在试图回避真相。而在真相缺席之后,作者关于价值判断的言说便不可避免地变得虚伪。

In this review of China National Theatre＇ s Beijing premier of John Shanly＇ s Doubt, the critic argues that the authorial intention is to whitewash a scandal with verbiage, although the advertisement for the production claims that it constitutes ＂a deep probe into doubt and belief＂. The review also seeks to demonstrate the delicate relation between the story and the real world in which it is located, citing its intricate plot as a device for evading truth, without which the playwright＇ s value judgment will necessarily be null.
