Objective To investigate the specialized features of the bat's outer hair cells (OHC) and stereocilia. Methods The bat cochlear hair cells were observed by the scanning and transmission electron microscope. Results The stereocilia bundles of OHC are extremely short. The OHC body exhibits a flask- or dumbbell-shape in the basal turn of the cochlea and are held in the cup formation of the deiters cell. Conclusion The specialized aspects of the cochlear outer hair cells and their stereocilia in the basal turn may represent adaptations for ultra-high frequency echolocation.
