摘要
我们首先必须定义“科学”这个名词。事实上“科学”一词应该是“现代科学”（modern science）的简称，因为科学的定义是近代和现代才真正产生的。在现代科学产生之前，科学还没有完整的定义，因而很难在没有定义的前提下讨论科学。所以，必须首先从历史的角度讨论科学的形成和定义。
Recently,there have been extensive discussions on definition of science in the Chinese intellectual com- munities.Challenging questions and controversial issues are not well answered and adequately addressed re- garding the identity of science and its relationship to Chinese traditional methodologies.This article addresses these issues by a historical review on the development of modern science in the Western Society.
