The essay is intended to concentrate on the interpretations of Emily Grierson from diverse perspecfives,the protagonist in William Faulkner＇s best known short story A Rose for Emily. It is pointed out that Emily is a multi - dimensional ambivalent combination filled with contradictions and troubles. Then Emily is further interpreted in the following aspects： as the advocator as well as the victim of American southern tradition; as a rebel of Ameriean southern tradition ; as an escapist of social reality ;and a pursuer of a happy life. The paper is aimed to help to better understand the story and the literary tradition of American South along with Faulkner＇s writing intention.
