Taiwan economy in 1996 Can be summarized as "intermal cold and external not hot", this situation reflected in these aspects: First, the economic growth rate is about 5. 5 %, compare with 6. 5 % in 1995 and 6.1 % in 1994; second, in the first ha1f of 1996, taiwan export increased slightly, and its import declined, and the whole foreign trade grew slowly; third, the recession of foreign trade inevitably caused the depression of Taiwan manufacture industries; Fourth, the growth of Taiwan Civilian inrestmtent Was Slow; Fifth, the income of operational tax didn’t reach the goal; Sixth, the memplayment rate increased.The reasons for this situation were as follow; First, Taiwan economic Structure had not adjusted well, it couldn’t adapt to the changed economic conditions; Second, the drarnatically Changed of Taiwan Industry structure and the expansion of financial defcit had weakened its ability against depression; Third, non-economc factors had become more and more important tm favourable to taiwan economy; Forth, the deterioration of the relations between the two coasts was an important reason for taiwan econondc depression.
