On the Concept of Filial Piety in Chinese Culture

孝道是中国传统思想文化中最重要的内容,它的来源和古代社会的"图腾崇拜"有关.人类进入了父权制社会后,出现了私有财产的分配和继承,进而产生了"孝"的观念.在封建社会,统治者"以孝治天下",孝道维护宗法社会和小农经济的稳定,同时也变为统治者实行封建专制的工具.目前,孝道仍然有着牢固的存在基础和价值,对现代生活产生巨大影响.

Filial piety is a very important aspect of Chinese traditional culture. The origin of filial piety has something to do with ＂totem worship＂ in ancient times. When human beings entered patriarchy society, the concept of filial piety appeared. In feudal society, the ruler dominated everything under heaven with filial piety, which became an instrument of feudal dictatorship. Now filial piety with its great value still has a solid foundation in social life. It is an important cultural problem to study in modern times. We should develop a new concept of filial piety through education, law and morality and make the filial piety into a kind of power to push the society forward.
