As the epigraph for Rabbit, Run, Updike quotes from Pensees by the French thinker Blaise Pascal, "The motions of Grace, the hardness of the heart, external circumstances. " This article, by focusing on the three points, is aimed to illustrate that the epigraph is the essence and covers the three aspects of the novel. It not only indicates the internal and external forces underlying Rabbit's motion of running, but also suggests that Rabbit runs towards a self he will never reach and that Rabbit's pursuit is destined to be a circular and trapped one. The reasons why Rabbit runs and what results his running brings about can be best illustrated by the Pascal conflict.
