Seeing Through the Water Worship of Ancients and Their Folk Custom

在以农耕经济为主的中国古代,水对于古代先民的影响非常广泛而重要,人们对水的依赖到了一种无以复加的地步。人缘水而生,缘水而居,甚至恋爱、结婚、生子以及祭祀祖先都离不开水。在万物有灵的观念支配下,人们对水充满了无限向往和崇拜,并由此产生了一系列与之相关的风俗习惯。

In Chinese ancient society that gave first place to agriculture, water influenced ancients widely and importantly. Ancients depended on water very seriously. They thought human beings were from water, so they lived beside water. Even their loving, marrying, having babies or offering saeririces to ancestors must have water. Under the view of that anything had its soul, ancients looked forward to and worshipped water very much and produced series of custom.
