Liaocheng:A Fascinating City of Waters in North China

聊城有着悠久的历史。远在春秋战国时期,聊城就是"筑城屯兵为齐之要地","洪武初年,置东昌府建城池"。明清时期,聊城缘京杭运河水陆交通之便利,商贾云集,沿河两岸,会馆林立,被誉为"漕挽之咽喉,天都之肘腋","江北一都会",成为京杭运河沿河中国九大商埠之一。

Liaocheng City in Shandong Province has a time-honored history. As early as the Eastern Zhou Dynasty （770 BC - 256 BC）, Liaocheng had already become an important garrison of the ancient State of Qi. During the Ming （1368-1644）and Qing （1644-1911） Dynasties, taking advantage of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal that crossed its territory, Liaocheng attracted a number of merchants and traders. Along the Grand Canal, there were row upon row of shops and halls. At that time, Liaocheng was so prosperous that it was regarded by people then as one of the nine commercial ports along the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou.
