The effects of metal loading, calcination temperature and promoter on the activity of group Ⅷ metal catalysts loaded on oxide supports for the methanation of carbon dioxide have been studied by diffuse reflectance FT IR spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet visible spectroscopy and thermomagnetic measurement. The results indicate that the catalytic activity is enhanced by the increase in metal content. However, excessive metal may cause the emergence of metal in free state which probably leads to agglutination. The rising of calcination temperature makes more metal ions enter the lattice of oxide supports to form spinel. The increase of the spinel content is accompanied with the decrease of catalytic activity. The second component metal promoters change the reduction behavior of group Ⅷ metal catalysts. Both the reduced extent of metal and catalytic activity are enhanced by the addition of second component promoters.
