A series of hydroxy Si Zr pillared interlayered montmorillonite (SiZr PILM) were prepared from Na montmorillonite by the reaction with copolymerized zirconyl chloride and silica colloid. The results of XRD, BET and DTA show that the thermal stability and surface area of SiZr PILM are higher than those of Zr PILM. Calcinated at 750℃, the retention surface area of SiZr PILM is 76 6% and that of Zr PILM is only 58 6%. The higher thermal stability of SiZr PILM is due to the enhanced interaction between pillar and layer by doping proper amount of silica. In SiZr PILM, the pillar is attached to layer by the Si-O-Al Ⅵ bond instead of Zr-O-Al Ⅵ bond in Zr PILM. The organic solvent and heat treatment of pillaring agent have positive effect on promoting the thermal stability of Zr PILM.
