The adsorption and oxidation of CO on Pt(111) surface have been studied by measuring simultaneously the rate of CO 2 formation and CO uptake during CO molecular beam impingement on oxygen pre covered Pt(111) surfaces. The results reveal that at high surface temperatures the oxidation rate is determined by the CO adsorption rate which increases slightly with the decreasing surface oxygen coverage. As most of the oxygen are removed from the surface the oxidation rate is proportional to the oxygen coverage remained on the surface. At low temperature the step of CO and oxygen combination becomes important and complex.
