Crystalline MgO catalyst treated by shock waves is investigated by ESR, TPD and activity measurement in catalytic dehydrogenation of 1 butene. The intensities of g=2.002 signal in ESR spectra of shock treated MgO are enhanced significantly, and increase with the increase of shock pressure. TPD measurement indicates that the amount of basic sites increased remarkably after shock wave treatment. At the same time the catalytic activity of MgO in dehydrogenatoin of 1 butene to butadiene also increased after shock wave treatment. The possible mechanism of the action of shock waves is discussed.
