委婉语不仅是一种语言现象,而且也是一种文化现象,是社会心理的一面镜子。不同的社会所创造的委婉语反映了不同的社会心理和文化的内涵。在对外交际活动中,人们应该了解这一文化现象,以免在外事活动中出现不必要的误会和尴尬场面。从委婉语的起源、婚姻生活有关的委婉语、生老病死相关的委婉语、职业称呼、政治生活以及日常生活中的委婉语六个方面对中英委婉语的文化内涵及社会心理进行了分析与比较,从而揭示出它们之间的差异。

The tactful language not only is a kind of language phenomenon, but also is a kind of cultural phenomenon. It is a mirror to society mental state. The tactful language in the different society creates that reflects different society mental state. People should understand this cultural phenomenon in order to prevent otiose misconstruction and embarrassed condition in the outside activity.
