This paper analyzes the significance of contrastive studies in college English writing class from the aspects of syntactic features and discourse patterns. It points out that the contrastive analysis will increase Chinese students＇ awareness of the effects of different thought patterns on writing, thus help them overcome the negative transfer of mother tongue and compose idiomatic English writing.
