The legend about XU Fu's eastward voyage widely spread both in China and Japan. In China, it was roughly originated from Going-into-sea theory in Historical Records, to Crossing -Danzhou Theory in The History of Three Kingdoms, and further to Going-to-Japan Theory in Shi Shi Liu Tie, finally to Bookgiving Theory by OU Yang-xiu. While in Japan, the legend about XU Fu's eastward voyage didn't become popular until the 14th century. The legend was closely related with the large-scale immigration in the transi- tional period from the Qin dynasty to the Han dynasty, but in the same time, it also reflected the long history of contact between China and Japan.
