对日本人来说，上海是一座具有深刻意义的城市。从西方列强强迫日本开国的江户末期到明治维新推行日本式现代化（日语里被称为近代化）的时代，为数众多的日本知识分子来到上海，亲眼目睹了在上海这座城市里正在展开的“现代化空间”及其引起的社会连锁反应。日本知识分子对这些连锁反应的看法，既显示了从外国人的角度去看待上海“现代化空间”这一活动的特质，也反映了日本和上海各自具有的现代性的本质，以及这两者之间的差异和文化冲突。本文通过分析刘建辉《魔都上海——日本知识分子的“近代”体验》，论述上海“现代化空间”给日本知识分子带来的影响。

Shanghai is a city of great significance to Japanese. From the later Edo period when the Western Great Powers forced Japan to open up for trading to the Meiji Restoration period when Japan was undergoing its modernization, a large number of Japanese intellectuals visited Shanghai. They witnessed the social activities of ＂ modernization space＂ deployed in this city and its domino effects. The viewpoints of Japanese intellectuals to such social domino effects not only revealed the nature of the ＂modernization space＂ in foreigners＇eyes, but also reflected the cultural differences and conflicts between the modernization of Japan and Shanghai.
