The paper focuses on the German late romantic writer,E.T.A.Hoffmann's “My Cousin's Corner Window”,intending to study its reflections on the relationship among perception, imagination and interpretation in the increasingly predominant verbal communication patterns in the context of the early 19th century, when Germany was transforming itself from an agricultural society to an industrial one,and when the city in the modern sense was being formed. The popularization of words led to the absence of body in communication, and the expansion of urban space aggravated anonymity. The experience of perception became more disintegrated, reduced to mere visual dimension, while the deterioration of sound and auditory sense left more room for imagination and developed semiosis.Interpretation thus became the chief means to construct “truth”.
